Where poetry meets chaos

At two in the afternoon one day this spring, I stood on a crowded, noisy street corner in a “no-go” area of Kingston, Jamaica, where I was serenaded by a dreadlocked street vendor who, having given up trying to sell me a cheap Chinesemade belt, decided to demonstrate his talents as a rapper. Prefacing his performance with “I love Canadian people, man!” he sang as if he were a contestant on Idol and I somehow had the power to lift him out of grinding poverty and this chaotic place.

Introducing Domegos: A New Web 2.0 Vacation Rentals Directory

Wandering around the internet, I was searching for 2 different things at the same time: a hotel for a romantic weekend getaway (with our lovely dog!) and a new apartment to rent. I suddenly asked myself: “Why not renting a vacation home instead of booking the usual same type of hotels (those few hotels that still accept dogs) for our long romantic week end?”

It’s hard to believe we’ve been here almost 3 months and are on the cusp of our first big vacation! Time has flown by very fast, which I suppose is a direct result of how busy we’ve been. So I figured it was a good time to send out an update and tell some stories of our exploits to date.

We finally moved into our house on October 28 after 7 weeks in a temporary guest house. It’s funny as we meet people here, how many of them also stayed in that place! It’s like it’s a rite of passage here. It was perfectly adequate but not having a yard was getting old with Ozzy, the “devil dog”. Also, there was a professional “party house” (really a patio) across the street which hosted events, usually with live VERY LOUD music, almost every Friday and Saturday night. Angolan parties usually go until dawn. It’s amazing anyone has their hearing left here.

Although you may not believe it...I'm still alive

Mike LambertWell, it’s been a while since I’ve last sent news. I think the reason for that is quite simple…there really doesn’t seem to be anything newsworthy on a day to day basis. However, when I think about the big picture (my living in China), life is actually quite exciting. Here’s a quick bullet-point list of how things are going so far:

Are: The Best Ski Resort in Scandinavia

Are, the most popular ski resort in Sweden, is located by Lake Are near Ostersund in the area Jamtland. In my opinion, it’s even the best ski resort in Scandinavia, a terrific place to ski whether you are 7, 25 or 50-years-old. The ski system has pistes and off-piste to suit everyone from complete beginners to professional extreme skiers. I remember the first time we came to Bjornen, east of Are, and tried to make our luck in one of the blue slopes. Because of the wide and easy pistes, Bjornen is perfect for kids and beginners. When our skills improved we skipped Bjornen and headed directly to Are’s main ski-system. One year we lived in Duved, west of Are. Unlike Bjornen this ski-system is not linked to Are, but great if you prefer a calmer location and less crowds.

Bahamas Sailing Vacations

The treasure of the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas is the country of nearly 700 islands, a stunning combination of magnificent reefs, and man-made miracles. The Gulf Stream is responsible for an astonishing variety of marine life. The Bahamas enjoys an international reputation for sailing, regattas, and races. The best season for a Bahamas sailing vacation is from November to March, but the peak period is from the middle of December to the middle of January.
