Alpha Blondy stages landmark concert in Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast’s biggest reggae star, Alpha Blondy, staged Sunday his first concert in his homeland since it was split by a failed 2002 coup, calling on his countrymen to put their bloody past behind them. President Laurent Gbagbo and some 5,000 fans turned up for the Peace and Reconciliation Concert in the picturesque coastal town of Grand Bassam, which served as the country’s capital in the early years of French colonial rule.

Thanks But No Thanks

Matt BresnahanDavid who commented on my last post,

I appreciate the intentions behind the words of warning that you put on my blog, but the substance of your comment leaves something to be desired. First, I was using hyperbole when I said that I was close to taking some guy into the bathroom; the comment was reasonable because anyone who knows me knows that such a thing isn’t in my character, and that it was more of a joke than anything else.

Among the Chasids in Williamsburg

The only picture I had of Williamsburg was from the Swedish culture journalist Nina Solomin’s “ok, amen”. This book about her time with the ultra-orthodox Jews in Williamsburg gives a unique insight in a radically different culture and mentality. You can recognize the Chasids on their black hats, black coats and corkscrew curls. Even though they live in the heart of a world metropolis, they live more or less isolated from their surroundings.

Thursday in Shanghai

Rick and EvaAfter a leisurely brekkie, and fond goodbyes to some of the departing group, Eva and I asked at the desk about getting to the intersection of YongKang Rd, Taisay Rd, and Fenyang Rd. These correspond to Remy Rd and Rue de Lestre of 55 years ago. It was quite cool and dry this morning, and never got above about 18C. We took a taxi at about 10am.

Ah Lisboa

KellyWe arrived in Lisbon yesterday morning (again, no customs, so no stamp on the passport!). We’re staying in a hotel here, which is a nice reprieve after the shocking WHE in Barcelona. It’s like we’re staying in someone’s house - a very quaint and charming little hotel (and extremely cheap!) where Samyelena has been kind enough to let me have the double bed. No breakfast (unless we pay for a standard continental breakfast, which in our experience is a sweet bread roll and some honey), but that’s no drama.
