Island sounds return to desert for music festival

Songs can both soothe and singe the soul — in a single stride.

“Life has always been a struggle; Distrust, fear and obstacles; Many are called, but few are chosen; Why can’t we all be merciful?”

Now set the words against the gently percussive rhythm and exotic melodic flavor of Jamaica.

Last Night: Best of the Best at Bicentennial Park

Last Night: Best of the Best at Bicentennial Park

As if you need an introduction, Best of the Best is by far, the biggest annual dancehall/reggae festival in North America today, comparable to say, SumFest held in MoBay, Jamaica. Yet for the Caribbean community here in South Florida, their irie was strategically placed smack in the middle of Downtown Miami as Bicentennial Park filled up with approximately 30,000 Jamaicans, Haitians, Bahamians, Trinis, Bermudians, and every other island nation that repped their flags high in the air.

Reggae: from Iowa to Hawaii

Dave Bess is living the dream. The Hawai’i-born ‘Iolani ‘99 grad rents a house with six bandmates so they can save money for their cross-country tours. They spend summers playing at music festivals, travel together in a van, write most of their own music and enjoy the oddball notoriety of being an all-white reggae band from Iowa.

Carnival - A sweet it sweet so!

Carnival - A sweet it sweet so!

Carnival in St. Kitts is sweet, sweet , sweet! The soca music blaring, the big drum resonating, the fife music piercing the air, the thrashing of the clatter, the rhythmic music of the steel pan, the chants of the masquerades, the running of the “bull”, the animation of the mummies and the cherished art of calypso are components that have accentuated the festival. Carnival 2007-2008 will be the 36th edition and the ingenious merger of Carnival with the Christmas Season- an experience unique to St. Kitts- has forever enhanced the festival’s brand and added to the appeal of the affair.
